Viticulture and winemaking
Our Australian winemaker, Hartley Smithers, recognized the great potential of Recaș for the Syrah (or Shiraz) grape and decided in 2006 to plant this grape variety on a sunny plot. The plot faces south-south-west and has a red clay soil rich in iron oxides. Syrah prefers sunny conditions and is grown mainly in southern France, California and Australia.
The grapes for Selene Syrah were harvested by hand to ensure the highest quality. At Recaș, great care is taken to preserve the purity of the fruit during vinification. In the exceptional year of 2020, the colorful and aromatic grapes of Nora Iriarte were processed with the utmost care. Vinification was carried out with few interventions, a slow maceration followed by 6 months of aging in barrels to stabilize and round out the tannins.
The Selene Syrah is bottled directly, without prior filtration of the wine. This method allows to preserve the natural flavors and characteristics of the wine in their purest form. The result is a wine that reflects the characteristic features of the Syrah grape and the terroir of Recaș.
