About GITANA WINERY

Gitana Winery is one of the most renowned wineries in the Republic of Moldova. The wines of the winery are the result of ideal local conditions and the expertise of its winemakers. Gitana combines tradition with modernity and ensures a comeback of Moldovan wines. Gitana wines are characterized by complexity and elegance as well as a very own style that reflects the specificity of its terroir. Fertile soil and a continental climate create an ideal terroir for viticulture with the hilly landscape, which is criss-crossed by valleys and rivers.

The history of the winery, then called Vinăriei Țiganca, began in the first half of the 18th century when two brothers from Greece understood the unique character of the landscape and bought vineyards. The very first vines produced wines of exceptional quality. Around 1953, the wines of the winery were known across national borders and valued for their special taste.

Unfortunately, the entire Moldovan wine industry suffered severe setbacks between 1985 and 1990 as a result of Gorbachev’s anti-alcohol campaign and was largely destroyed.

In 1999 the Dulgher family took over the winery and made great efforts to restore wine production. The wine cellars have been renovated and investments have been made in the latest technologies, barrels and new vineyards. Since then, the wines have been successfully marketed under the name Gitana Winery in Europe, the USA and Asia.
